I'm a little late updating my blog for October. My apologies. I'm sure by now you all know we have a new part time 5th grade teacher. She's terrific! Each class chose 7 students to be in Mrs. Conner's class for language arts and math.
On a personal note, my beloved little yorkie "Mansie", who was with me for almost 20 years, died on the 1st of October. She was definitely a good companion to me and listened to many of my complaints, problems, and news - both good and bad. I appreciate the support I got from students and parents. Thank you.
During October we are studying the early explorers that discovered North America for Social Studies. We have just completed a report on Christopher Columbus and now each student will choose an explorer he/she finds interesting to research and do a report. Each student will create a graphic pre-write on the computer using 'Inspiration'. That information and outline will them be used to write a report. The report will be done as if they were the explorer. i.e. "My name is Christopher Columbus. I was born in...I represented the country of...My greatest discover was..." The report will be presented orally to the class. This assignment should be finished in school, although occasionally, a student may have to finish at home if he/she gets behind.
We started a mystery unit in Language Arts. Each student has a leveled mystery novel to read, along with activities to do each day. Our writing this month is titled "Monster Playhouse". Each student creates the text that will then be displayed in a haunted house.

For Science, the students are rotating to Mrs. Larsen. They will be learning measurement and all about healthy bodies.
During Math, we have been working with multiplication properties - estimating products, multiplying by 1-digit numbers, 2-digits by 2 digits, and 3-digits by 2-digits. We are also learning multiplication by exponents. We will be starting division - dividing multiples of 10 and 100, estimating quotients, dividing by 1-digit numbers, and using zeroes in the quotient. We will also increase understanding of factors and explore prime and composite numbers.
This is UEA weekend is a well deserved break for all of us. The students have a little more time off than what the teachers get, but it's all good:-)
The required homework this weekend for students is to totally enjoy the weekend!!!
