Wow - It's February Already!

Biztown
the students had a wonderful learning experience at Biztown. They really stepped up and performed as responsible adults performing real-life jobs. The found they really had to hurry in order to get everything done. Our volunteer parents were marvelous. They kept the students focused and on task. Thank you so very much for spending your day with us. There was a computer glitch at the end of the day and the students weren't able to reconcile their business accounts, but it didn't affect the overall experience the students had. Make sure you take time to click on the link to our class Wiki Page to see the pictures.

Note: Please remember to have your student read 35 minutes a night (175 min. a week). Some of them are not getting the credit they need. Independent reading a a grade. There are a handful of students that are not regularly not bringing in the notes. Let's make February reading a 100% month!!!

Calendar of Events
This is a month full of things to remember
1st: Utah Symphony at Abravanel Hall
13th: Class Valentine's Party - Students to bring their own valentine box that day
15th: No School - President's Day
23rd: Field Trip to State Capitol - watch our Legislatures at work
26th: No School - Teacher Professional Day

Language Arts
Reading: We are beginning our survival novels. Students reading two of the following books: Captain Grey and Weasel; Dogsong and Call It Courage; Riding Freedom and Weasel; or Iceberg Hermit and Running Out of Time. The books are really exciting and the students will really enjoy them. Please ask your child about the novel he/she is reading and the reading trait we studied for that day. As soon as one is finished, they will jump right into another daring book.
Spelling: Regular Sitton spelling words with homework on Wednesdays, Skill & Proof Test on Thursdays, and Word Test on Fridays. I really appreciated all the homework that is done and returned. Thank you.
Vocabulary: We will be learning social studies words for vocabulary this month
Writing: We are writing in our journals, creating some valentine heart sayings, doing lots writing connected with social studies and reading, and practicing for our Direct Writing Assessment (DWA) scheduled for March 1st and 2nd.

Social Studies
We are studying the constitution. What a great time for these students to be learning all of this, just a year after such an historical Presidential Election. We are learning about the branches of our government, how a bill becomes law, and our rights as people of the United States. It is great that we will be able to go to the State Capitol and watch our own legislators at work.

Math
We are just about finished with division and are heading full blast into fractions and decimals. We will be learning to perform operations, such as add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, simple fractions, and decimals.

Science
This month we are starting the study of Inherited Traits. The students really enjoy learning about some of the traits they have inherited.
