We had 100% of the class meet their independent reading goal for February!! Wahoo! Let's do it again in March.
Literacy Night
Please mark your calendar for Thursday, March 19th. Park Lane is having their 1st Literacy Night from 7:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Our class will be performing a Reader's Theater. They love doing this, so it should be a fun evening. There will be 2 sessions so if you have another student in the school you won't miss their performance. Please let me know if your student will not be present so we can make accommodations.
Language Arts
We are reading our 2nd survival novel. The books we are reading are Iceberg Hermit, Weasel, Call it Courage, and The Big Wave The students seem to really be enjoy this unit. We will be finished in a couple of weeks and then move to some stories in our readers that will go along with our social studies unit. We will also be working on our Reader's Theater for Literacy Night.
Writing
Since it is March, we are learning about leprechauns and the myths surrounding them. After we read several books about them, each student is going to write their own understanding on "How to Catch a Leprechaun". They will then wrap their composition in an art project.
Social Studies
We just finished a very educational unit on the constitution. We are now continuing our study of the 19th century and the changes for the U.S., including westward expansion, constitutional crisis, and economic growth.
Science
Our day at JA Biztown was a great success. The entire 5th grade had a day working as an adult in the business world. All of the work and preparation was well worth it. Thank you so much to all the parents who spent the day with us working as advisors for our little workers. We had a ball!! I will soon have pictures uploaded to our wiki space.
My class is now going to Mrs. Larsen for science rotations learning about physical and chemical changes.
Math
Students have been working really hard learning fractions. There are a lot of concepts to cover - comparing & ordering, equivalent fractions, finding common demoninators, and equivalent decimals & percents. We will be taking the chapter test with electronic clickers. Ask our child to explain them to you. They love them.
